As our phones got smarter and bigger, the demand for tablets got smaller and smaller. That said, tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 are still very useful for those who need a proper computing device without skimping on portability.
It will pack a Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood, but we feel that the latest Snapdragon 835 would have been a welcome addition, and would have gone a long way in making the device more future proof. The Tab S3 will have 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage (expandable to 256GB via microSD).
Where the Tab S3 really shines is its real-world performance. The brilliant 9.7″ AMOLED display does a good job, and is easily bright enough. The device runs TouchWiz on top of Android Nougat, and we were impressed by it. TouchWiz has matured a lot since what it was when they original Galaxy Tab was launched, and we are happy to report that progress has been made.
Another area where the Tab S3 shines is its battery life. A claimed 12 hours of screen on time is something which is needed on all devices. And when the battery does get drained, you won’t have to wait long because of adaptive fast charging. This means that using this while traveling won’t be a hassle.
Tablets have never been star performers in the camera department, and if you want this tab to blow you away, you will be disappointed. That said, it is easily enough for most people, with 13MP AF (f/1.9) rear camera and 5MP (f/2.2) camera. The speakers are noteworthy, which will come in handy for users.
Let us come to the star of the show now: The S Pen. With a 0.7mm tip, a pressure sensor level of 4096, and a diameter of just 9.4mm, using this will feel like using a normal pen. What’s more is that you do not need to charge the pen.
But, there’s more. Samsung have also launched a keyboard specifically for the Tab S3. This means no plugging and compatibility issues. While the price of the keyboard alone is very steep at Rs. 8499, it is more of a niche product and is clearly not for the masses, much like the tablet itself.
At Rs. 47990, the Galaxy Tab S3 is one expensive tablet. That said, it is still cheaper than its chief competitor, the iPad Pro. If you are in the market for a tablet, we recommend you give this one a serious look.
